Choose Well - choose the right health service

A new national campaign designed to help Welsh patients choose the best place to get treatment if they fall ill has been launched by Health Minister Edwina Hart.

The Welsh Assembly Government, in conjunction with NHS Wales is launching the Choose Well campaign to boost public awareness about the NHS services available to them.

Evidence shows that a significant number of people still go to Hospital Emergency Departments (A&E) or dial 999 when there are other services more convenient and suitable for their needs.

The campaign uses a colour coded thermometer to help people to link their symptoms with a particular NHS service which is right for their need.

Staff from across the NHS including GPs, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and consultants will be encouraged to promote the Choose Well campaign. Look out for radio, internet and bus shelter advertising, and leaflets and posters have also already been produced by some Health Boards.

Tony Jewell, Chief Medical Officer for Wales said:

“When asked, people gave us a very strong message that they weren’t really aware of all of the services that existed, or how they should be used.

“We are hoping that this campaign is going to prove useful in helping people towards accessing the right services, at the right time to meet their healthcare needs.

“Helping people make the right choice in accessing services will not only benefit patients themselves but also assist our doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to maintain high quality services.

“We want to make sure people living in Wales get the right care in the right place at the right time.”

Mrs Hart said:

“By giving people choice and helping them to understand the range of support available, the Choose Well campaign will help members of the public to understand how they can help themselves and the NHS by choosing the most appropriate service if they fall ill.”

Using a colour coded thermometer, the campaign will highlight six areas of healthcare:

Self care – for the treatment of minor illnesses, by combining a well stocked medicine cabinet with plenty of rest.

NHS Direct Wales – for absolutely any health questions, around the clock, and to find local services at the click of a button.

Chemists / Pharmacists - for advice on common illnesses and the best medicines to treat them.

GPs – for medical advice, examinations and prescriptions for illnesses you just can’t shake off.

Minor Injuries Units – for treatment of minor illnesses or injuries without the need for an appointment.

Emergency Department (A&E) or 999 – for critical or life-threatening situations.
