The Welsh Government is investing in Cardiff’s most deprived communities in these tough times
The Welsh Government is investing more than £5.9 million over the next two years to support Cardiff’s most deprived communities, the Deputy Minister for Tackling Poverty Vaughan Gething highlighted yesterday at a special event looking at efforts to address poverty in the city.
Communities First is the Welsh Government’s flagship programme to help those living in poorest areas of Wales. It works to improve health, prosperity and encourages access to education and learning.
There are 52 Communities First clusters across the country with four in Cardiff which are to receive £5.9 million over the next two financial years so they can continue to support communities.
Cardiff is also benefitting from the expansion of Flying Start that supports children have the right start in life by providing eligible parents free quality childcare for children under the age of four, parenting support, an enhanced health visitor service and help with their children’s early language development. The latest figures show that 3,368 children received Flying Start services in Cardiff in 2012 -13.
The Deputy Minister will be speaking at a gathering organised by the Cardiff Partnership Board that is made up of senior managers across the public and voluntary sectors in Cardiff.
Speaking before the event, Vaughan Gething said:
“Despite the massive cuts to our budget, we are determined to continue to do all it can to help those most in need in our society.
“That is why we are investing £5.9 million over the next two years to help the poorest areas of Cardiff with the aim of helping those out of work to find jobs, making sure people have the right skills and education to improve their life chances.
“However, we recognise we cannot tackle poverty on our own and it is great to see so many different organisations at this event that all have a huge contribution to make to this agenda.”
