The Welsh Assembly Government is consulting on the definitions of recycling, preparation for re-use and composting; the monitoring arrangements and the financial penalties for not meeting statutory targets.
Wales is set to become the first country in the UK to introduce statutory recycling targets. On 2 November the National Assembly for Wales passed legislation to introduce statutory municipal recycling targets. The first target year is 2012-2013.
The Minister said:
“The Waste Measure is an important piece of legislation for Wales, and a huge step forward in our aims to reach 70 per cent recycling by 2025 and be a zero waste nation by 2050.
“Our local authorities have already done a fantastic job in contributing to Wales’ recycling rate increasing by more than anywhere else in the UK in the past decade. I want them to keep up the good work and urge them to take part in this consultation.”
The consultation closes on 21 January 2011.
