Consultation opens on teaching funding efficiency savings
HEFCE is consulting on proposed efficiency savings in teaching funding. The consultation specifically suggests savings among 'targeted allocations' outside the mainstream teaching grant.
This consultation follows the May 2009 letter to HEFCE from the then Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills. This letter requested that HEFCE assume the need to make cashable efficiency savings of about £180 million across recurrent resources for teaching and research in 2010-11.
The savings being consulted on would build on HEFCE's announcement in May 2009 of a £65 million pro-rata reduction in teaching allocations to institutions (to take effect in the last part of the academic year 2009-10), and on savings estimated to follow from changes in inflation estimates. Taken with the planned reduction of resources for research of £16 million, these efficiency savings will total approximately £121 million for 2010-11.
This consultation asks for views about how the necessary further saving of approximately £59 million for 2010-11 may be achieved, specifically through reductions to selected targeted allocations.
