Developing a qualification for communication support workers
Lifelong Learning UK is supporting the development of a qualification for educational communication support workers.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families have funded a consortium, I-Sign, to support the development of educational services for deaf children, young people and their families. Members of the consortium include the British Deaf Association, The Royal National Institute for Deaf People, Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education, and Merseyside Society for Deaf People.
Signature, the awarding body recognised for promoting excellence in communication with deaf and deafblind people, is leading for the consortium on the development of a communication support worker qualification.
Working together with Lifelong Learning UK and educational communication support worker organisations, the National Association for Tertiary Education for Deaf people and The Association of Communication Support Workers, Signature is supporting the development of a pathway within the Level 3 Certificate in Learning Support qualification.
An online consultation and regional events will take place in January 2010.
