Action plan to help refugees re-build their lives in Wales
The Welsh Government has set out its plan on how to support refugees and asylum seekers.
Launched by the Finance Minister yesterday, the new action plan aims to improve relationships between refugees and communities and help them integrate into Welsh life.
The Refugee Integration Strategy, accompanies the existing Refugee Inclusion Strategy, and sets out actions that the Welsh Government will undertake in conjunction with their partners, and also ways that the actions will be monitored and evaluated.
Jane Hutt, the Minister responsible for equalities, said:
"As a government, we are committed to treating refugees and asylum seekers with dignity and respect.
"Our aim is to enable them to rebuild their lives in Wales, and to provide the support to help them make a substantial contribution to Welsh life and culture."
The plan details how the Welsh Government will, for example, ensure equality of access to maternity services for refugees and asylum seekers, and protect the welfare of unaccompanied children seeking asylum.
It explains the government will respond to concerns over the trafficking of children and vulnerable adults, and ensure access to healthcare and increase opportunities of volunteering and employment.
The Action Plan was launched by the Minister, Jane Hutt, yesterday at the Somali Youth Awareness Conference in Cardiff.
The Minister spoke at the event, a celebration of the achievements and successes of the Somali youth community in Wales, to promote the role of young people in achieving equality throughout the country.
Making a speech, she said:
"Supporting young people is central to the Welsh Government’s vision for a strong and prosperous Wales. It is essential that we create strong communities that can unleash the potential of our young people. And in turn we hope young people will help make their communities a better place to live.
"It is important that young people can celebrate their family background as well as playing their part in building a Wales for the future."
