The Guardian newspaper yesterday highlighted the work of the Shannon Trust to help prisoners who can read to teach those who cannot.

Tuition from other prisoners who do have reading skills makes offenders better equipped to find work at the end of their sentences. The Toe by Toe peer mentoring programme is supported by a network of 160 volunteers in the community and a similar number of prison officer facilitators.

Launching this year’s Guardian Charity Awards, the newspaper described how the Trust has grown since it was recognised in last year’s awards, and it reported on ambitious plans to further expand the project.
