LSN and Democratic Life

LSN is one of the founding members of Democratic Life, a coalition of organisations and individuals seeking to strengthen and extend young people’s entitlement to high-quality citizenship learning in England. Democratic Life aims to highlight citizenship’s unique position in England’s National Curriculumand of course beyond into post-16 education and training. It is the only subject that teaches learners about their rights and responsibilities as citizens – and how they can participate effectively in society – by developing their understanding of politics, democracy, the law and the economy.

At a time when there is much discussion about the ‘Big Society’ and the role we all play in it, citizenship activity helps young people develop the important skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to participate fully and make a difference in the communities where they live and learn.

The coalition government is currently reviewing the National Curriculum (ends mid April 2011), and Democratic Life is urging the government and all parties to support citizenship education so that it remains in the national curriculum and schools continue to improve the teaching of the subject. With political society and political structures being challenged in the UK and across the world, citizenship education is as important as ever.
