NHS Confederation comments on CQC outpatient survey

Commenting on the CQC outpatient survey, NHS Confederation deputy director of policy Jo Webber, said:

"Patient feedback is an important mirror to hold up against any healthcare organisation. NHS leaders need to closely examine individual feedback on their organisation and continuously look at how and where they can do better.

"These results show that, overall, services are improving despite the pressure building in the system. We should acknowledge this progress given the pressures many organisations are under.

"But NHS leaders cannot be complacent as financial strain increases. Maintaining high clinical and financial standards will be essential in the coming years, as will a rigorous effort to encourage care and compassion right through the system. Making this happen will require leadership that challenges behaviours as well as structures and processes.

"Respondents to this survey have highlighted particular issues around communications about their care. We know good communications is something people value and it's really important we don't slip back on this as demands on the system increase. It is vitally important to keep patients fully informed about any changes to aspects of their care, from appointments right through to details about their treatments."

Notes to Editors

1.    The NHS Confederation represents all organisations that commission and provide NHS services. It is the only membership body to bring together and speak on behalf of the whole of the NHS. We help the NHS to guarantee high standards of care for patients and best value for taxpayers by representing our members and working together with our health and social care partners. We make sense of the whole health system, influence health policy and deliver industry-wide support functions for the NHS.
