Over £1 million to help communities protect the environment
Environment Wales helps and encourages community groups to protect and improve the Welsh environment. For over twenty years the organisation has provided funding, one-to-one advice and support to community projects wanting to take practical environment action.
The third-sector organisation is currently funding or considering funding over 300 projects. This funding and support helps organisations like Cardiff People First to run activities such as its Recycled Fashion Show for young people with learning difficulties.
Environment Wales also provides support to conservation projects such as the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre that promotes people’s awareness and understanding of the species, habitats and the protection of the wildlife in the area.
This additional funding will allow Environment Wales to support the sustainable management of more than 1,500 acres of woodland, gardens, parks and nature reserves, help run 30 community gardens, allotments and growing projects, promote 15 recycling and re-use initiatives and 70 projects contributing to the Welsh Government’s Action Plan for Pollinators and Nature Recovery Plan.
Announcing the funding Alun Davies said,
“Environment Wales plays a vital role in protecting our natural environment.
“It is critical that we protect our environment, increase resilience and diversity and manage our natural resources sustainably to help support our economy and enable us to create a better future for the people of Wales.
“Over one hundred communities across Wales will benefit from this funding through projects run largely by Environment Wales volunteers. I would like to thank everyone who continues to give up their time to allow these vital environmental projects to continue.”
Clare Sain-lay-Berry, Environment Wales Co-ordinator, added:
“This funding will allow us to help even more communities to take project ideas off the drawing board and turn them into reality. We are delighted by the Minister’s continued support for local action on the environment that also delivers so many other sustainability goals.”
