Review of the Designation Scheme – we want your views
Until Spring 2014, we are conducting a review of the Designation Scheme. We welcome your views on our proposals by 31 December 2013.
The Designation Scheme identifies collections of national importance, based on their quality and significance. These inspiring collections represent a vital part of our national cultural and artistic heritage.
The scheme was launched in 1997 and now recognises 140 collections held in England’s museums, libraries and archives. Organisations with Designated collections care for a significant part of England’s cultural heritage. Designated collections span the length and breadth of England, from the collections at Porthcurno Telegraph Museum to the holdings of the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere; from the fine art at the University of Birmingham to the collections at the Britten-Pears Library.
Earlier this year, the Arts Council commissioned an independent survey to gather opinions about the future of the Designation Scheme, which we have used to put together a proposal for its future. We now want to hear from you about our intended changes.
This is the last consultation paper we will be publishing on the Scheme before we put together the new application and assessment processes. We welcome views on our proposals by 31 December 2013.
