Further information on new student places for 2009-10

HEFCE has written to universities and colleges outlining the implications of the 10,000 undergraduate places for 2009-10 announced by the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills on 20 July. This follows the letter to HEFCE from the Higher Education Minister, David Lammy, on 23 July setting out guidance on the announcement.

The new places will be available for full-time undergraduates in priority subject areas designated by the Government to support its New Industry, New Jobs policy, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Government will fund the costs of the student support and loans towards institutional fees, but will not provide additional HEFCE grant to institutions.

These places will relax but not remove the restriction on recruitment of full-time undergraduate students placed on institutions.

The share of places has been determined by the number of full-time undergraduates that entered in 2007-08 in the priority subjects that the Government identified. Where institutions have indicated to HEFCE that they are unable to take up their share of places, HEFCE has redistributed them pro-rata across the sector.

Annex B of HEFCE’s letter to universities and colleges shows the provisional distribution of places and represents the minimum number of places available to each institution. Final allocations will be published on Friday 31 July 2009.
