NAO criticises NHS computer care records scheme

The NAO has released its third report on the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) and the Institute for Government concludes that the conclusions are damning.

The report highlights a number of failings that have left the programme running over budget while falling short on delivery. In particular, the constant renegotiations and contractual disagreements between the Department of Health and the IT suppliers forced up costs and caused inevitable delays.

One of a long list of government IT failures

The NPfIT story sounds all too familiar. For too long government IT has seemed to be locked in a vicious circle: struggling to get the basics right and falling further and further behind the fast-paced and exciting technological environment that citizens interact with daily.

In the Institute for Government's recent report on government IT, System Error, they argued that a totally new approach is needed. This approach emphasises adaptability and flexibility while retaining the benefits of scale and collaboration across government. We described these twin tracks as ‘platform’ and ‘agile’.
