Guidelines for £90m Regeneration Funding Pot

Regeneration Minister, Carl Sargeant has published guidance for applicants seeking a share of up to £90 million that will be available over the next three years from the Welsh Government’s new regeneration framework, Vibrant and Viable Places.

Vibrant and Viable Places includes a range of activities to reverse economic, social and physical decline in town centres, coastal communities and Communities First clusters.

The Minister said:

“We need to find new ways to regenerate these key areas and I want our investment to act as a catalyst for wider action.

“I want the investment to support the overall priority for my portfolio which is housing. I will also be looking for creativity and innovation in all funding applications and for them to include contributions from the private sector and voluntary groups.

“I plan to target schemes that make best use of the wide array of possible funding sources. It is important that funding applicants understand that I will only invest where I believe we can have maximum impact.

“The guidance I have published today sets out how the budget will be allocated and how applicants should apply. Although funding will not be allocated until all bids have been assessed, I expect our investment to be targeted on a small number of areas.“

Councillor Harry Andrews MBE (Caerphilly), WLGA Spokesperson for Regeneration and Economic Development said:

“Vibrant and Viable Places demonstrates a clear commitment to ensuring that regeneration activities are as joined-up and effective as possible, and the WLGA welcomes the clarity this guidance provides for applicants on how to apply for funding within Wales’ new regeneration framework.

“Cabinet Members for Regeneration from across Wales have recently met with the Regeneration Minister, Carl Sargeant and heard more about the focus that will be placed on housing in Wales, and we look forward to working with the Welsh Government to ensure that we achieve the correct balance of regeneration projects for the areas of Wales that need this investment the most.

“Collaboration to boost regeneration, sustainable investment, jobs and prosperity is a major priority and local government has long recognised the need for all partners to coordinate their services and spending in order to stimulate local economic growth and regeneration. Local government in Wales will now work closely with its strategic partners to develop a range of applications that will deliver maximum impact for communities in Wales.”
