Employment and Learning Committee Welcomes Joint Review into Careers Education

The Committee for Employment and Learning has welcomed departmental plans to review existing careers education policy. These plans follow on from a recent Committee inquiry which called on the Departments for Employment and Learning and Education to implement a series of recommendations to improve on the provision of local careers education.

Chairperson of the Committee, Robin Swann MLA, said: "The Committee inquiry made a series of robust recommendations which included the promotion of STEM subjects and greater support for people with learning disabilities and those who face barriers to employment.

"We are obviously very pleased that the Employment and Learning and Education Departments have not only agreed with our recommendations but have used them to inform the terms of reference of their upcoming joint review into careers information and guidance.

Mr Swann concluded: "This type of partnership approach between Departments and Committees is essential if we are to make much-needed changes to careers education. It is a positive start, and we look forward to seeing the detail and plans that follow the Department's review. The Committee will continue to keep a close eye on this issue to ensure that our young people can access the kind of quality and timely careers advice they need to make informed choices for their future."
