Support for Commonwealth Games and Homecoming 2014 initiatives.

Funding projects to engage the lesbian gay bisexual transgender (LGBT) community in 2014 events, including the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Homecoming 2014 have been announced by the Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robinson.

Speaking at the launch of LGBT History Month, Ms Robison pledged £15,000 to support this initiative and also help LGBT Youth Scotland develop a number of major artistic and creative activities as well as educational events related to Homecoming themes and the Commonwealth Games.

All of Scottish society is being encouraged to actively engage and participate fully in Homecoming and Commonwealth Games events.

Ms Robison said:

“The Year of Homecoming in 2014 and the Commonwealth Games will provide a unique opportunity to encourage more and more visitors, both international and domestic to come and enjoy Scotland and will position Scotland on the international stage as a dynamic and creative nation.

“2014 is Scotland’s year to shine. It is important that we can take pride in knowing that everyone in our society can participate in all we have to offer.

“This is our opportunity to demonstrate what an equal and fair society Scotland is."

LGBT Youth Scotland Policy Director Mhairi McMillan said:

“We are proud to partner with the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland as part of the Year of Homecoming. As Scotland opens its doors to the world in 2014 we want to send out a clear signal that the people of Scotland welcome everybody, and that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people should not be simply tolerated but, in fact, celebrated.”
