Cycle security

What we are doing to help keep your bike safe.

We are working with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), British Transport Police (BTP) and City of London Police (CoLP) on an initiative called Project Cycle Ops to crack down on cycle theft in the Capital. It involves using various tactics, including bike marking and registration events, crime prevention advice to cyclists and enforcement.

The TfL-funded MPS Cycle Task Force regularly set up engagement stalls offering advice as well as free security marking and registration onto BikeRegister's online database. Registering your bike helps police and retailers identify and verify the legitimate owner of bikes that have been stolen or are being resold. Security marking your bike deters potential thieves as your bike can be easily traced if it is stolen. Check out where and when free cycle security marking and registration events are taking place in your area.

Advice for keeping your bike safe

Park and lock your bike at designated parking areas, using two quality locks and making sure each lock secures both wheel and the bike frame to the parking stand.

Follow the Three Rs:

Record - Keep a photo of your bike and record details of the frame number, make and any other marks that can identify your bike if it is stolen.

Register - Register the details of your bike and any distinguishing features/frame numbers on the MPS-preferred online cycle register. Registering details of your bike helps the police and retailers identify and verify the legitimate owner of bikes that have been stolen or are being resold.

Report - If your bike is stolen report it to the police and provide as many details as you can, such as frame number, make and distinguishable marks. Bike theft is a significantly under-reported crime. Reporting will enable police to check databases and contact the owner once the bike is recovered.
