First Minister officially opens £9.7m million housing scheme
The Plas Telford Extra Care scheme in Plas Madoc has been named after the builder of the nearby Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Managed by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, it has been designed to promote independent living for older people over the age of 55 in a safe and supported environment.
It is the first development of its kind in the Wrexham area and has received £4.7 million of financial support from the Welsh Government, with the balance being made up of private finance raised by the Pennaf Housing Group.
The scheme has 54 fully self-contained one and two bedroom luxury apartments, and an extensive range of communal facilities, including an on-site restaurant, hairdressing salon, cinema and hobbies room, together with an IT room, library, and communal lounges.
The First Minister joined invited guests and representatives from the partnership behind the scheme to watch a ribbon be cut by local Ysgol Acrefair school pupil Nikita Hodgson.
The First Minister said:
"I am delighted to be here today to see how our investment of £4.7 million will help transform the lives of local residents. This scheme offers older people the opportunity to not only stay in their local community but also to live independently.
"Helping people to live as independently for as long as possible is a key aim of the Welsh Government and Plas Telford is a great example of how we can help achieve this."
Mr Dafydd Ifans, Chair of Clwyd Alyn Housing Association said:
"The overall scheme has many eco-friendly features incorporated into the design, and it’s wonderful to see new tenants happy in their new homes and to see so many links developing between them and wider community in the area."
Cllr Mark Pritchard, Wrexham County Borough Council Lead Member for Housing and Planning said:
"Plas Telford is a great scheme, providing a whole range of opportunities for older people and a welcome addition to the services we offer in Wrexham.
"It is an impressive and exciting development which not only offers an excellent independent housing option for older people across the county, but also combines independence with being part of a vibrant local community in Plas Madoc."Related Links
