First Minister opens Wales' biggest solar park

Wales’ renewable energy ambitions will continue to surge ahead as First Minister Carwyn Jones officially opens Wales’ largest solar park.

The First Minister attended an event at the Rhosygilwen estate in Pembrokeshire where a £2.5m investment in 10,000 solar panels is delivering an even better than expected supply of green and clean electricity.

The 1.2MW scheme is already generating enough electricity to power 650 homes and businesses.

The First Minister addressed a group of children from Ysgol Cilgerran, Aberteifi and Preseli and local community entrepreneurs.

The First Minister said:

“This project is a shining example of what can be achieved by renewable energy generation in Wales.

“Increasing fuel prices and our drive to reduce carbon emissions mean that a transition to renewable energy production is more important than ever.

“Welsh Government partnerships with sustainable organisations such as Western Solar are vital if Wales is to achieve its ambitious renewable energy targets and take full advantage of the associated social and economic opportunities that the move to green energy provides.

“The potential of tapping into this energy source of course depends on the feed-in tariffs available for energy producers. I appreciate that the energy infrastructure must be upgraded in the most cost effective way and I support the UK Government’s review of feed in tariffs.

“However, it is vital that confidence and credibility in energy policy is retained. That is why I would urge the UK Government not to change the feed in tariff rates until it has fully considered the responses of its consultation, and concluded that its proposals will deliver the necessary results."
