REACTION TO PICKER INSTITUTE SURVEY: HEALTHCARE COMMISSION SAYS MORE NEEDS

An analysis of the Healthcare Commission's national patient surveys of NHS patients in England has been published by the Picker Institute today. Commenting on the report, Dr Jonathan Boyce, the Healthcare Commission's director of surveys, said:

"This is a very useful analysis of our surveys. It focusses on both trends over time and variations between trusts, allowing for good practice to be shared.

"The report confirms the progress which has been made in areas such as waiting times, but also highlights that there is along way to go before we have a health system that puts patients at the centre.

"Many patients still consider they don't have enough say in decisions about the care and treatment they receive. In fact, in some instances things have got worse.

"For example, more people are now reporting they are being given conficting information by healthcare staff. Patient views are important at the best of times, but such trends make it especially important for us to continue monitoring how patients view the care they get in the NHS."
