Further drop in crime is welcome news for local communities - PCCs respond to another fall in crime statistics

Yesterday's data from the Independent Office of National Statistics shows a 9 per cent decrease in overall crime compared to last year, continuing the downward trend seen in recent years.

Reported crime has dropped to 3.7 million offences - the lowest levels since 2002/03.

Although the overall statistics are good news, the sub-category 'theft from the person' showed a 9 per cent increase.

Responding to these welcome statistics, Tony Lloyd, Chairman of the APCC Board and Greater Manchester PCC said;

"
The fact that crime levels are down to record low levels will be welcome news to local communities. It is a tribute to the police service that during a period of unprecedented change and difficult decisions to balance force budgets, our fundamental public service has not been deflected from their key goal - cutting crime. Congratulations to police officers and many other agencies involved in these achievements."

"Police and Crime Commissioners are working closely with Chief Constables to help cut crime. Many are recruiting more police officers and investing in mobile technology to reduce bureaucracy and keep our crime fighters out on the street."

"My colleagues and I are concerned about the increase of 'theft from the person'. Mobile phone theft is a particularly problem for young people. We are working hard to put in place measures to improve services offered to victims and to protect the vulnerable from those who would prey on them."
