International science panel

QCDA was represented at the recent inaugural advisory panel workshop for a new international project led by the University of Exeter. The Science Education for Diversity (SED) project also involves universities from India, Lebanon, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Turkey.

Sustaining and improving interest in the sciences is vital both for the health of national economies and for democratic participation. SED is a three-year EU funded Science in Society project that will explore the cultural aspects that influence young people's interest in and engagement with science.

The project aims to identify successful approaches to increasing young people's engagement and participation in science in different cultural contexts and to disseminate good practice.

At the workshop the SED advisory panel worked with the project partners to review the UK context, relevant frameworks and activities undertaken to address cultural dimensions within science education. They also discussed contexts, concerns, priorities and good practice in each partner country in order to inform the detailed design of the research programme.

The project is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission.
