‘Stay safe’ know-how combats risks of abuse in teen relationships

Highlighting abuse in vulnerable teenage relationships and ensuring young people know how to stay safe will be at the heart of an initiative receiving almost £300,000 from Big Lottery Fund (BIG) yesterday.

AVA (Against Violence and Abuse)
will raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence with around 400 young people across England and encourage them to be advocates for their needs across social care and education. It is one of 74 innovative initiatives sharing a total of £17.6m from BIG’s Reaching Communities programme this month.

AVA will also pilot therapeutic group work with young women who have experienced or are at risk of violence and abuse in West Kent and Doncaster, and focus on youth leadership development. Young people will also have the opportunity to form youth panels to educate their peers across the country, and use their experience to inform and influence initiatives.
