The Government places great value on the work prison staff undertake on behalf of society. I am pleased to announce that the Government has accepted the independent Prison Service Pay Review Body’s recommendations in full.

This decision recognises important reform work that is being progressed across public sector prisons to deliver significant savings for the tax payer.

I am pleased that the independent Prison Service Pay Review Body has acknowledged the difficult work being done by prison staff in an unprecedented period of change.

Their recommendations – supported in full by the Government – recognise the scale of challenge in public sector prisons and the professional way in which staff have responded to this.

The PSPRB have also supported the Government’s proposals to invest in important reform to managers’ pay so they can lead by example in taking forward the necessary changes across the service.

1. This is the 13th report of the Prison Service Pay Review Body (PSPRB).
2. The role of the PSPRB is to provide independent advice on the remuneration of Governing Governors and other operational managers, prison officers and unified support grades within its remit in the England and Wales Prison Service. The overall number of staff within this remit group on 31 December 2013 was 26,050.
3. From April 2011 the PSPRB has been chaired by Dr. Peter Knight CBE. Peter Knight retired from the position of Vice Chancellor of Birmingham City University in 2007 and has since held the appointment as a Local Government Boundary Commissioner for England. From 2004-2010 he was a member of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body.
