CBI responds to Government announcement on efficiency savings

The CBI responded to a Government announcement that it has made £10 billion in efficiency savings since 2009/10.

Jim Bligh, CBI Head of Public Services Reform, said:

“The Government has made a good start by exceeding its £8 billion efficiency savings target but there’s still a long way to go.

“Our research shows that more than £270 billion spent on public services could be opened up to independent competition from the private and third sectors, with the potential to generate £23 billion in efficiency savings.

“To achieve this, the Government needs to start thinking like a commissioner, rather than a provider of public services.”

The CBI Open Access Report argues that opening up public services will save taxpayer money.
