IPCC to investigate Humberside Police's detention of mentally ill woman

The IPCC is to investigate the care and treatment a woman received during a period in police custody before she was taken seriously ill after being transferred by Humberside Police to a mental health unit.

The 22-year-old woman was arrested on 26 October and taken to hospital before being detained at Clough Road police station in Hull.

Humberside police have told the IPCC that the woman was later examined and assessed before she was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

She was then transferred to a mental health unit in Hull from where, some days later, she was taken to hospital in a seriously ill condition.

The independent IPCC investigation will examine the care provided to the woman, the supervision she was placed under and any other evidence available, including medical assessments.

Cindy Butts, the IPCC’s Commissioner for Humberside, said: "I have determined that an independent investigation is necessary to determine if the care provided during this woman’s custody was of an adequate standard and if any more could have been done to highlight any medical concerns prior to her transfer to a mental health facility.”
