Embargoed until 00:01 Thursday 18th March 2010 - Statement by Higher Education Minister David Lammy on HEFCE grant allocations
Responding to Higher Education Funding Council for England distributing £ 7.3 billion to Higher Education Institutions, David Lammy Minister for Higher Education said:
"We said all along that the 10-11 financial position was manageable, and these allocations show we were right. The average cash funding for universities is going up by 0.4% and with a further £37m still be allocated, this will rise further.
“These changes come after years of sustained investment. Higher education funding is up by 25% in real terms since 1997. Funding for the research base has doubled in real terms and we have helped universities tap other streams of funding, so that total UK university income is now more than £23 billion.
“Like everyone in the current financial climate institutions have to do their fair share of belt tightening but these figures do not show a university system in crisis. We now call on all institutions to focus on delivering excellent services to students and our research base, and to manage their costs efficiently, including maintaining discipline on pay.”
