Brighton and Hove to introduce city-wide Article 4 direction
Landlords in Brighton and Hove who want to convert family homes into small HMOs will have to apply for planning permission to do so.
It comes as Brighton and Hove City council’s cabinet approved the plans earlier this month.
An existing ‘Article 4 direction’ is currently in force in some parts of the city, in the wards of Hanover & Elm Grove, Hollingdean & Stanmer, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean, Queen’s Park and St Peters & North Laine.
In January 2020 the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee agreed to extend the planning controls to the rest of the city (apart from the area in the South Downs National Park which comes under a different planning authority). The extension of the scheme will come into force on 3rd June 2020.
It comes just a month after Birmingham City Council announced a new city-wide Article 4 Direction, which will come into effect in the summer.
