Proposals to extend regulations concerning carbon monoxide alarms are being considered by the government.

Barry Sheerman MP (Labour, Huddersfield) has received a response to his written question asking if the government will bring forward legislative proposals to require carbon monoxide alarms in both private and social-rented homes with a carbon fuel-burning appliance.

Under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015, which came into force on 1 October, 2015 PRS landlords must have a carbon monoxide alarm in any room containing a solid fuel burning appliance, e.g a coal fire or wood burning stove.

Review

The government launched a review in 2018 asking whether this should be extended to cover oil and gas appliances and rolled out to the social sector.

The Housing Minister, Esther McVey MP, responded by noting how seriously the Government took the risk of carbon monoxide positions, and pointed to a summary of Government activities.

She added: “We are also considering the findings of the government review of carbon monoxide alarm requirements which looked at whether these requirements should be extended to all carbon fuel-burning appliances in private and social rented homes.

“We will set out the next steps in due course.”
