LGA statement on 'Move On' period extension
The Home Office has announced that it will temporarily extend the Move On period - the time between someone claiming asylum receiving a decision on the application and having to leave Home Office funded accommodation - from 28 days to 56. The LGA said this was a positive step that will benefit councils, communities and people seeking asylum.
“This temporary extension of the Move On period from 28 to 56 days, something the LGA has long called for, is positive news for councils, communities, and people seeking asylum.
“This move brings the asylum Move On period – the time in which people have before they must leave Home Office accommodation after receiving a decision on their asylum application in line with existing timelines for other individuals and families at risk of homelessness.
“People will have more time to find homes and employment, reducing homelessness and destitution risks. We are keen to work with government to ensure the new process is clear for both councils and those receiving a decision on their asylum claim, and on how the impacts of the change will be monitored and evaluated to support a permanent extension to the move on period being 56 days.”
