NRLA quoted by housing minister on section 21 call

Housing Minister, Christopher Pincher MP quoted the NRLA when confirming the government would NOT be rushing through legislation to abolish section 21.

Rupa Huq MP (Labour, Ealing Central and Acton) called on the Government to bring forward “immediately” its plans to end Section 21 repossessions during oral questions to ministers at MHCLG this afternoon.

The Minister acknowledged the work of the association, and said that while the government is still committed to abolishing section 21 as part of legislation to be brought forward by the Renters’ Reform Bill, this will need to take place in a “safe, and sensible and sustained way”.

He said that government is working with judiciary, the advice sector and others to protect those tenants in the most difficult situation as a result of coronavirus and cited the extra £7 billion spent by DWP to help make this happen.

He yesterday said:

“We are working with the National Residential Landlords Association. They advise me that in the private rented sector rents have fallen by 1% in the latest round of tenancy renewals.”

The Shadow Housing Secretary, Thangam Debbonaire MP argued that the current financial support for tenants was not enough and called on the Government to “act now” to prevent an eviction crisis in the autumn.

The Minister responded by saying that the Government had worked hard to protect tenants from eviction and ensure they have the funds to pay their rents through the furlough scheme, and increase LHA and extra funds for Discretionary Housing Payments.

  • The NRLA opposed plans to abolish section 21 and have lobbied ministers stressing section 21 must stay until and unless a new system is put in place providing landlords with the same level of confidence in the repossession process. You can read more here.
