TUC: climate marches are an urgent cry for action

The COP26 coalition climate marches are taking place across the world on Saturday 6 November to demand action from world leaders.

Trade unions across Yorkshire recently (Saturday) marched in solidarity with climate strikers, local activists and young people who are demanding climate action from world leaders at COP26.

The COP26 climate marches are organised to take place across the world today, including demos in Sheffield, Leeds, York and Hull.

TUC Regional Secretary Bill Adams recently said:

“From Sydney to Sheffield, from Lima to Leeds, working people are coming together today to make an urgent cry for action at COP26.

“Trade unions are at the front line of climate change. We represent workers in the most polluting industries, and it is in our interest to ensure our members can find good, green union jobs in the new zero carbon economy.

“Climate change matters for working people across Yorkshire. Be that flooding in the Upper Calder valley, or job losses as steel plants face closure. So we need to see solutions that create new green jobs in every local community.

“The closure of the coal mines and abandoning of pit villages here means Yorkshire folk know what happens when they’re not at the bargaining table: they’re on the menu. And right now in Yorkshire there are a quarter of a million jobs at risk if we move to net zero.

“We are proud to march with our neighbours in the struggle for climate justice. All our futures depend on urgent climate action. There can be nothing agreed about us without us.”
