Update on IPCC investigation into the death of Lewis Johnson
The IPCC investigation into the death of Lewis Johnson, who died in a collision after he was pursued by Metropolitan Police (MPS) officers in Hackney, is progressing.
Investigators have collected CCTV, examined all relevant vehicles and taken accounts from the majority of potential witnesses.
A further three MPS constables have now been served with gross misconduct notices in connection with the investigation.
Two officers who were in a second police car which was at times involved with the pursuit were served notices on Thursday March 17. One was in the front passenger seat and the other in the rear of the car.
Another police constable who was in the front passenger seat of the police car pursuing the Vespa scooter Lewis was driving at the time of the collision was served a notice today (Monday 21 March).
During a pursuit officers are expected to communicate with the force control room.
A police constable and a police sergeant - the drivers of the two cars - have previously been served misconduct notices and advised they are under criminal investigation.
As the investigation enters its next phase, IPCC investigators will focus on evidence collected to date and working with specialist collision investigators.
Mr Johnson’s family and the scooter passenger and his family are being kept up to date on the progress of the investigation.
