NHS Digital has published its Annual Sustainability report for 2020-21, highlighting both recent successes and the challenges it is working to meet.

The report covers a range of topics, including an update on the development of a Climate Change Risk Assessment Model, to help understand the climate and ecological risks posed to the organisation. 

It also sets out the significant reductions in the estate footprint following the move from several sites in Leeds to a single hub as well as the challenge of how to measure the carbon footprint following the pandemic-related shift from offices to employees’ homes. 

There are also case studies showcasing the system-wide environmental impacts in 2020-21 of various technological interventions, including the huge growth in the use of the NHS App and the uptake of remote collaboration and consultation services, all of which has created a significant and positive sustainability impact. 

Patrick Clark, Associate Director of Core Infrastructure at NHS Digital yesterday said:

“The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital collaboration agenda and enabled rapid and far-reaching sustainability benefits. 

“Sustainability is a critical priority at NHS Digital and our report published today shows that we have continued to work at pace to drive rapid de-carbonisation and sustainability improvement.”
