New Chief Executive of Her Majesty's Courts Service
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has appointed Chris Mayer as Chief Executive of Her Majesty's Courts Service (HMCS).
The Chief Executive of HMCS is a transformational leadership role, driving culture change, new ways of working and efficiencies through a large, complex organisation. The Chief Executive is the principal advisor to the HMCS Board and, through it, Ministers, on the delivery of services through the courts, and is accountable for the day to day operations of HMCS.
Christine (Chris) Mayer is currently HMCS Regional Director for the North West Region and has been in this role since 2003. She has worked for the Department for 35 years and has held a number of important roles within Her Majesty's Courts Service and, in earlier years, within MOJ (formerly the Department for Constitutional Affairs, and the Lord Chancellor's Department) Headquarters.
The Right Honourable Jack Straw MP, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, said:
"I am delighted that Chris is to take on this key role at the Ministry of Justice. Chris' 35 years of experience in the courts mean she brings with her a wealth of knowledge of the courts and judicial systems. I would like to welcome her to the new post and look forward to working with her."
On taking up her appointment Chris Mayer said:
"I am very proud to be appointed as Chief Executive of Her Majesty's Court's Service at a time that has seen the recent introduction of the New Framework agreement, to work alongside the newly created HMCS Board and to work in partnership with the Judiciary. I am also honoured to lead an agency that provides support to the Courts in England and Wales and is key to the delivery of access to justice. I am looking forward to the many different challenges that this new role will bring and working with colleagues and stakeholders in delivering excellent services."
Notes to Editors:
1. The Ministry of Justice was formed on 9 May 2007, and includes the National Offender Management Service from the Home Office, and the Department for Constitutional Affairs.

3. Christine Mayer is currently a widely experienced Regional Director of HMCS, in the North West region, has a long track record in courts administration, and is a member of the HMCS Board. She joined the Lord Chancellor's Department as a direct EO entrant after A levels, and worked through a number of roles before joining a county court, which she enjoyed. There followed roles in finance and HR before she became a court manager. She can demonstrate wide experience including Court Manager, Courts' Administrator, Group Manager, Greater Manchester and Central Manchester and northern Circuit Administrator. She became Regional Director 5 years ago, and her work has been at the heart of change within the Courts Service. She has participated in wider Civil Service initiatives including the Top Management Programme, and she sits on the Board of HMCS.
