Make living wage condition on contracts, ministers told

Commenting on last night's Newsnight report about the London Citizens campaign for a living wage for Whitehall cleaners, PCS called for it to be a condition on all contracts.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "PCS fully supports the campaign for the living wage as a minimum for all workers.

"Our members working for the government work hard in what can be difficult and unpleasant jobs, and are paid just £6.08 an hour.

"The responsibility for their poverty pay lies squarely with companies like Mitie who are trying to win a never ending race to the bottom and with a Tory-led government that wants to drive down pay.

"Ministers should make paying the living wage a condition on all its contracts and dismiss any companies who refuse so they don't get a penny more of our money."
